Congratulations to Robin J. Mermelstein, Ph.D., as the Chancellor’s Committee on the Status of Women’s 2014 Woman of the Year. Dr. Mermelstein is a full Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Illinois at Chicago, since being recruited as an Assistant Professor in 1987. In 2008, Dr. Mermelstein was offered the responsibility of Director of the Institute for Health Research and Policy. Through Dr. Mermelstein’s leadership, the Institute for Health Research and Policy is the largest research institute of the University of Illinois at Chicago and in 2014 the Institute was awarded more than $18 million in external research funding, ranking it among the top UIC campus departments for research productivity. Dr. Mermelstein has dedicated her research career to women’s health, with her main focus falling broadly in the area of tobacco use, with studies ranging from longitudinal examinations of the etiology of youth smoking to cessation interventions for adult smokers.
